Commission plans Red Barn cleanout and vendor layout ahead of Oct. 3 Heritage Fair

The Sandown Heritage Commission discussed preparations for the Oct. 3 Heritage Fair, including a planned cleanout of three stalls in the Red Barn to create space for demonstration booths and exhibits.
Chair Pamela Goodrow described the condition of the stalls: one is damaged with a broken window and likely unsalvageable materials, a middle stall stores conservation equipment and a popcorn machine, and a third contains large items from the Mothers' Club. Goodrow said Tim Robinson, vice chair of conservation, has been contacting current stall occupants (including materials left by a Boy Scout troop that is no longer active in Sandown) and that commissioners expect to schedule a cleanout in the coming months to ready stalls for event use.
Commissioners discussed safety and logistics for planned demonstrations: blacksmithing and the forge cannot take place inside the barn because of sparks and fire risk. Goodrow said if only a blacksmith demonstrates, the commission might reconsider the scope of the fair or arrange outdoor demonstrations. She also suggested approaching local volunteers and exhibitors (for example, reenactors or those with Revolutionary War artifacts) to host small displays in individual booths.
The commission also reviewed grounds issues related to vendor placement: volunteers recommended locating vendor tables on the berm around the pond, but commissioners raised concerns that overgrown scrub trees now block views from the benches and will require trimming before the event. Goodrow said she will pursue tree-clearing options and announce cleanout dates to commissioners when scheduled.
