Resident urges city action at Chambers Creek Road/87th Avenue Court West intersection over short turn lane
Summary
A University Place resident told council the center turn lane at Chambers Creek Road and 87th Avenue Court West provides only 38 feet of storage compared with 105–355 feet at similar intersections and asked the city to engineer a safety fix, including removing the center island.

At the public comment portion of the July 6 University Place City Council meeting, resident Sheree Mapes described a "foreseeable and preventable" traffic hazard at Chambers Creek Road West and 87th Avenue Court West and asked the city to conduct a formal engineering review.
Mapes, who provided council an 18‑page packet, said the two‑way left turn center lane at that intersection only offers about 38 feet of storage, far less than the 105–355 feet she measured at eight similar intersections along Chambers Creek Road. "The distance is simply not enough," she said, adding delivery and garbage trucks often cannot fully enter the turn lane and part of their vehicles remain in the through lane, which increases rear‑end risk and forces following drivers to make evasive maneuvers.
Mapes asked the council to consider removing the center island to improve left‑turn storage and reduce collision risk. Mayor Stan Fleming thanked her for the presentation. Staff did not provide an immediate engineering response during the meeting; councilmembers and staff later acknowledged the request and encouraged staff review of the submission.
Next steps: staff to review the materials provided and consider whether an engineering study or other traffic mitigation measures are warranted.
