Rio Village Board approves home-based business permits, event licenses and committee appointments

The Rio Village Board approved a package of routine permits, licenses and committee appointments at its May 5, 2025 meeting, while public works staff flagged two department vehicles that may need replacement.

Village President James Olrick called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. and the board first approved the meeting agenda and minutes from previous April meetings. Trustees then unanimously approved Conditional Use Permits allowing Carol Bradley (210 W. Harvey Street) and Jill Kennedy (419 Division Street) to operate home-based child care businesses and allowing Brian Schaub (145 High Street) to operate a home-based window-tinting business; the board noted those permits will be reviewed annually.

Director of Public Works Robert Lang told the board crews are working on routine maintenance but reported frame issues on the department’s Blazer and Dodge and said he will have Steve’s Auto inspect the vehicles to determine whether repair or replacement is required; he said a special board meeting may be needed for approval if replacement is necessary. Trustees also discussed and approved a $130 sewer credit for Redeemer Lutheran Church after the church experienced continuous water loss from a leaking water softener.

The board approved a Class B beer license for the Rio Softball Association (applicant Anthony Selle) and picnic licenses for the Rio Alumni Association for an event at the Rio Fire Station on June 7, 2025, and for the Gene Michael Roberts Memorial Foundation for an event at Rio Fireman’s Park on August 22–24, 2025.

Trustee Stan Stofflet reported for the Fire Association during the meeting. Trustees approved outstanding invoices as presented. The board approved Jon Landsverk as the trustee for the Planning Committee (the motion passed with five yes votes and one abstention from Landsverk) and then approved the full slate of 2025–2026 board and citizen committee appointments as presented. Trustee Heidi Husom arrived during the meeting. The board set upcoming meetings — the Board of Review is scheduled for May 19 and the next Village Board meeting for June 2 — and adjourned at 6:32 p.m.
