Long Prairie public works warns: 'flushable' wipes clog pumps; lead service-line outreach to begin

City public works staff told the Long Prairie City Council on Sept. 10 that the new main lift station is operating with few issues but that pumps have been plugged by products marketed as "flushable" wipes. Council Member Clint Krueger said the city will include notices with upcoming utility bills to remind residents that such wipes are not flushable.
City Engineer Kent Louwagie also updated the council on several infrastructure items: turf restoration following CSAH 56 & 38 work, a completed Riverside Drive drainage swale repair, scheduled demolition of the old lift station and treatment plant the week of Sept. 22, and generator work at the water treatment plant pending delivery of a transfer switch. For the Lead Service Line Inventory, the city will mail notices to properties with unknown pipe materials; Bolton & Menk staff will make occasional door-to-door visits to visually confirm service-line materials inside buildings under a Minnesota Department of Health grant.
The council did not take formal action in the meeting beyond accepting the updates. Staff listed next steps and outreach methods for the public to reduce pump blockages and to assist the lead-service-line inventory effort.
