Committee hears draft IT inventory and early savings of about $9,000 annually

IT staff told the Public Services and Facilities Committee on July 7 that they had inventoried the municipality's 2025 IT spends and compiled a working draft for 2026 intended to identify recurring, cancelable and one-time costs.
"The 1st thing we did was develop a list of all the IT costs based off of the 2025 budget," an IT presenter said. Staff described categorizing services and identifying high-dollar targets, including VC3, Charleston County contracts, Segre, Verizon, Comcast and T-Mobile.
Staff reported that initial cancellations requested from Segre could save roughly $1,000 a year and Verizon line reductions could save about $8,000 annually; they said additional savings may be possible after vendor meetings and potential RFPs. Staff also suggested some legacy vendor arrangements include services with low or zero current usage that could be trimmed.
Committee members encouraged continued vendor review, marketplace comparisons and, where appropriate, hiring independent technical expertise to validate opportunities. IT staff said the effort is early-stage and will include a focus on telecom lines, software subscriptions and contract reporting so the city stops paying for unused services.
No procurement decisions were made; staff will continue pruning low-usage accounts and engage account managers for targeted vendors.
