Gold Line vehicle pantograph contact disables Blue Line temporarily; staff launches investigation
Summary

MPTA staff reported that on Friday, July 3 a Gold Line vehicle experienced pantograph contact with an overhead catenary hanger that broke and tripped substations into a fail‑safe mode, cutting power and affecting Blue Line service.
Acting Chief Operating Officer Lee described the incident: "The pantograph made contact with the hanger, which caused the hanger to break, which caused a chain reaction, which caused the substations to go on a fail safe mode, which shut down power." Rail operations responded and personnel were on scene within 30 minutes; staff said they restored equipment and service within two hours of the incident.
Staff said they reported the event to the State Safety Oversight office (NCDOT SSO) in a timely fashion and that the rail safety team is investigating root causes and any process improvements, including evaluating the timeliness of passenger notifications during the outage. The board discussed the challenges of extreme heat on overhead lines — staff noted that catenary can sag in high temperatures — and emphasized rider communications and emergency response. "We are evaluating if there are physical fixes or changes that could be made to help safeguard the rail equipment in extreme weather," interim CEO Brent Cagle said.
Operations implemented bus bridges to move passengers while track power was out and said communications, including app notifications and automated messages, will be reviewed and improved as necessary. Staff also noted planned maintenance work on South Boulevard that will cause temporary single tracking and described increased weekend service planning for upcoming large events.
