Roberts accepts state radio grant, approves fireworks and advances group-home ordinance for legal review

The Village Board voted May 11 to accept a state Daily Use Radio Grant to outfit portable radios for public safety and emergency management and approved several public-safety and community items including fireworks for Good Neighbor Days, traffic-control changes near the school and referral of group-home ordinance language for legal review.
Chief Jerry Strohbusch told trustees the grant award, totaling $32,000 for five portable radios, represents an 80/20 funding split; the state typically offers $8,000 and the village would cover the local share (discussed for inclusion in the 2027 budget). Trustees Scott Gerhardt and Jeff Vogt supported accepting the grant; Trustee Vogt moved to accept and the motion carried.
Trustees also approved fireworks contingent on proper application and authorized making Division and Graham a four-way stop with lit, high-visibility signs on Graham to improve pedestrian safety. The board approved installing four no-parking signs around Wilkens Way and Hilpert Street that display fine amounts.
On group homes, trustees reviewed sample ordinance language based on state statute templates and agreed to recommend legal review. The recommendation included limiting to two facilities no closer than 2,500 feet together and requiring submission of a Business Plan of Operation, with a path for exemption requests. Trustee Tim Johnson moved to send the language for legal review and Trustee Jeff Vogt seconded; motion carried.
Finally, the board approved updates to its 2026 committee list and, after a closed session, hired Alexis Swanepoel as Water/Sewer Clerk and Jessica Wildner as Office and Police Admin with hourly pay and benefits and a 90-day review.
