The Limestone County Commission voted unanimously July 6 to adopt a resolution to purchase a parcel on South Jefferson Street from the City of Athens for $355,000 to use as an animal shelter site.
The purchase, advanced by the chair in a brief discussion, drew praise from commissioners and members of the public who the chair said were “really excited to see this piece of property purchased.” County Engineer Mark told commissioners a meeting with an architect is set for Wednesday to begin planning before the county takes possession. “We do have a meeting set for Wednesday, with an architect,” the engineer said.
The chair framed the purchase as long-awaited and said Commissioner Gatlin will act as the county’s liaison to work with city and shelter partners to move the project forward. Commissioners also noted that planning work and engineering are already under way to explore options for work release and other programming tied to the site.
The motion to approve the resolution was moved, seconded and carried on a unanimous vote. The commission did not specify a construction schedule or funding breakdown at the meeting; those details were described as part of the next planning steps.
