Rockland board hears fire truck proposal; schedules April 22 meeting to consider fire protection fee

President Jon Hohlfeld presided over the Village of Rockland board meeting on April 8, where Trustee Bob Rueckheim and Scott Wehrs of the Bangor/Burns Fire Department presented a proposal for a new fire truck that would raise the village’s cost for fire protection. Rueckheim and Wehrs told the board the purchase would add about $16,500 annually on top of the $48,000 Rockland currently pays the department, and that payments could exceed $60,000 next year as costs rise.
Trustee Rueckheim said the board has not previously charged residents a fire protection fee but that the Public Service Commission permits such a charge. The board scheduled a special meeting for April 22 at 6:00 p.m. to continue discussion and consider approval of a fee that would appear as an additional charge on the water/sewer bill.
The scheduled meeting will allow the board to consider detailed cost information, fee structure options and any legal or administrative steps needed to add the fee to utility billing. No fee was adopted at the April 8 meeting; the board set the April 22 session as the next procedural step.
