Olanta council: SCIIP water expansion to start within weeks; SRF-funded line replacement not yet bid

The Olanta Town Council heard progress updates Jan. 8 on two water projects that affect town customers and infrastructure. Mayor Michael W. Welch said the town has received approval for additive #2 of SCIIP grant A-23-C154, which will extend water service from Carmon Short Cut Road to Kelley Crossroad and back into Olanta. Welch said pipe for the extension has been delivered and the town is awaiting fittings and hydrants; crews are expected to begin work in about two weeks with completion targeted for July 2026.
Welch also told the council that the SRF-funded project (210006-05) to replace about a mile of lead/copper/asbestos lines on Hampton Street and to rehabilitate the town’s water tank has not yet started and that no bids have been taken. He said the Water Authority is still in an information-gathering phase and provided no firm schedule for the SRF project.
Taken together, the announcements mean an active construction start for the SCIIP expansion is imminent while the SRF-funded replacement and tank rehabilitation remain at an earlier stage. The council did not vote on additional funding at the meeting; Welch said staff are monitoring procurement and will return with more details in subsequent meetings.
