Center and Blue Hills fire chiefs report June calls, training and 100th‑anniversary events

Chief Fernando reported that Center Fire responded to 45 calls in June, including structure and vehicle‑related responses, CO activations, power‑line incidents and hazardous‑materials calls, and said the department completed annual hose, nozzle and pump testing.
"We responded to the Blue Hills District 3 different times in June for a dual response," Chief Fernando said, and he thanked the Bloomfield Volunteer Ambulance and police department for support during the town’s carnival and centennial events.
Blue Hills Fire Chief Jones said his department answered 44 calls in June, including two fully involved vehicle fires (on Gorm Avenue and on Owens Road) and multiple medical and detector activations. He reported no injuries in those incidents and said recruitment currently shows several new volunteer applicants progressing through the recruiting process.
Both chiefs highlighted training: department‑level hazardous‑materials drills, quarterly company meetings, and practical sessions on breathing apparatus and pump/ladder operations. Each chief said community events, including Juneteenth and a combined carnival, were well attended and provided important public‑safety outreach opportunities.
Councilors thanked both departments for public safety support at recent events and for their centennial‑anniversary work.
