Mayor: Downtown grocery renovation would cost about $1.9 million; town unlikely to pursue

Mayor Michael W. Welch told the Olanta Town Council on March 5 that a price estimate to renovate the downtown building at Liberty and Main for a grocery store came back at about $1,917,000 for the building shell, not including interior fixtures or merchandising materials.
"It would cost 1,917,000 to renovate the building only. Does not include any materials for the inside of the building," Welch said, adding that he does not see that as an option for the town given the cost.
No formal council motion was recorded to pursue renovation or allocate town funds toward the project. The minutes do not record follow-up steps or private-sector interest; the council's discussion was limited to the cost estimate and the mayor's assessment that the price put municipal purchase or renovation out of reach.
