Board discusses making policies public and updating the internet-use agreement; policy subcommittee proposed

At the June 5 meeting the library director said multiple public-facing policies are difficult to locate, out of date, or condensed into brochures rather than posted verbatim. Isabelle recommended separating policy, procedure and patron handouts so the official policies are ADA-accessible on the website while clearer handouts remain available for patrons.

"The only time that patrons actually see the internet use policy is when they sign up for a library card," Isabelle said, adding that the library currently keeps a paper agreement when patrons — particularly children — sign up. She proposed making the internet/computer-use policy publicly accessible online and noted the current child-account procedures require written parental consent on file under the library’s existing practices.

Board members discussed practicality and resources for revising policies. Isabelle suggested the board create a policy-specific subcommittee to inventory, separate and publish policies (for example, circulation, disclosure of records, programming-reconsideration and the peanut-free policy). Members noted that some elements — for example parental access to minors — are governed by state statute and that the board should ensure policies reflect current law.

Isabelle said the library will prioritize the internet-use policy and materials-reconsideration procedures, and will present proposed reorganized policy documents when they are ready. The board did not take formal action on policy changes at the meeting but asked staff to prepare draft documents and to post updated policies in public spaces and on the website.
