Mayor: Olanta water expansion nearly complete; SRF-funded lead-line and tank work headed to bid

Mayor Michael W. Welch said the town's SCIIP A-23-C154 water-expansion project is close to completion, with contractor Barwick Plumbing having installed 93,334 of the planned 94,913 feet of water main. Welch told council that jack-and-bore work is complete, a few directional drill connections remain, two fire hydrants must be installed and about 100 service taps are left; the project is planned to be finished by June 30, 2026.
The mayor also updated the council on a separate State Revolving Fund project (SRF 210006-05) covering lead, copper and asbestos line replacement and water-tank rehabilitation. He said engineering drawings are nearly finished and must be submitted to SRF for approval; once the drawings are approved, the town intends to put the work out for bid.
Why it matters: The two projects together address distribution and safety concerns for Olanta's water system and will affect customers served by the new mains and the tank rehab. Completion of the SCIIP expansion will add nearly 95,000 feet of main and the SRF project, once bid and contracted, will fund line replacements and tank work intended to address material and water-quality issues.
Council took no formal vote on either project during the update; the mayor provided the schedule and progress numbers and told council he expects the SCIIP contractor to finish installation work by the end of June. The SRF drawings must clear SRF review before procurement begins.
