Board members praise Sahuarita Mustang marching band after canceled Philadelphia performance

The Cerritos Unified School District governing board used part of its July 28 meeting to recognize the Sahuarita Mustang marching band’s efforts after a planned Philadelphia performance was canceled.
"I about fell out of my chair," Superintendent Dr. Manuel Valenzuela said when describing the cancellation, but he added that the experience was nonetheless "transformational" for students who prepared, fundraised and traveled with the band. He thanked parents, Director Garland and volunteers for rallying to support the students and noted local news outlets invited the band to perform after the parade cancellation.
Board member Denise Reese echoed that gratitude, thanking community volunteers and naming the Askren family (Carl Askren) for volunteering a trailer that transported instruments and ensured uniforms and equipment arrived intact. Reese said the effort was "a labor of love" and that the district is "supremely grateful" for the outpouring of support.
Board members and staff noted the educational value of the trip for students even though some scheduled events were canceled, and they described local media coverage and volunteer logistics that allowed students opportunities to perform despite the disruption.
