Superintendent Dr. Manuel Valenzuela told the Cerritos Unified School District governing board on July 28 that the district is advancing multiple projects financed by the most recent bond package, including playground and facility renovations across several campuses.
"If you walk around any of our campuses, you would see tangible indicators that we are working with diligence, intentionality, and resolve to deliver on our promises, honoring our trust to the community in the investments they've made through the most recent bond package," Valenzuela said. He described new developmentally appropriate playground structures at Lehi — including a playground designed for special-education needs — and a summer overhaul of the SPS gym, where the carpet has been removed and renovation work is expected to be completed in time for the start of the school year.
Valenzuela also said the district plans to convert existing space into a fully self-contained cafeteria and warming kitchen to reduce students’ travel between buildings; that conversion is slated to be finished by January. At Sahuarita High School he highlighted science laboratory upgrades including new benches, countertops and millwork completed this summer.
On the Walden Grove campus, Valenzuela described a new performing arts center under construction. "This project is full speed. Again, it's gonna be a performing arts space of, almost 500 people. I think it's 475," he said, adding the facility will be an asset for both the school and the greater community.
Valenzuela said several of the projects reflect cost-sharing or partnerships with local government — noting the North Park courtyard/playground as an example where the district and the town are splitting costs to extend community access. He did not provide a total dollar figure for the bond package at the meeting.
The board did not take formal action on any contract or appropriation during the report; Valenzuela framed the update as progress reporting on bond-funded work and timelines to be completed ahead of the next school year.
