A representative of the Boys & Girls Club asked the Parks and Recreation Board to reduce or waive the admission fee for staff supervisors who accompany large groups of children to the city pool this summer. "My name is Aynel Sherrod, and I'm the education supervisor at the Boys & Girls Club," she said, asking that chaperone admission be reduced back to $3 from a posted $4 so staff could supervise weekly groups without added cost.
Staff told the board that adult supervisors count toward pool capacity and that the department does not yet have a written fee rule for chaperones. "So there are some challenges when it comes to capacity and the pricing of the facility," a staff member said, urging care to avoid creating an unfair precedent for other groups.
After discussion about scheduling and current pool repairs, the board voted to grant the Boys & Girls Club the requested discount on a temporary basis until the next board meeting on July 21, contingent on pool availability. "I'll offer the Boys and Girls Club the discount as it's proposed here until we can come up with a firm process," the chair said. Staff said the lower side of the pool remains closed for maintenance and that availability will determine whether groups can use the facility.
Board members directed staff to draft a formal policy on group and chaperone fees for consideration on July 21. The motion to grant the temporary discount carried unanimously.
