City engineering staff presented a 90% design for a new sidewalk along 48th Place between 47th Place and Muskogee and answered council and resident questions about design choices, trees and stormwater.
Kim Truong, project engineer with Charles P. Johnson, described the preferred north‑side alignment, noting it avoids removal of about 13 trees that a south‑side alignment would require. The design will add a 5‑foot concrete sidewalk, replace six residential driveways, move curb and gutter one foot into the street (narrowing the travel width to 25 feet), and provide ADA‑compliant driveway aprons and ramps. “The preliminary cost estimate is around $200,000,” Truong said.
Truong explained there will be a roughly 4‑foot pinch point near an existing utility pole that remains within ADA allowances and that where retaining walls or driveway adjustments are needed the contractor will tie into existing elevations to maintain ADA cross slopes. Councilmembers praised staff engagement with neighbors, requested continued resident outreach during final design and noted the project will return for construction authorization when design is finalized.
Staff listed next steps as finalizing the design, completing any permitting, and advancing the project to construction bidding when funding and approvals are in place.
