The Maysville Board of Aldermen voted Dec. 11 to place Ordinance No. 2024-15 on first and second (final) reading by title, setting an April 8, 2025 election on whether the city should forgo annual municipal elections for six years if the number of candidates filing equals the number of seats up for election.
Alderman Amy Justus moved to put the ordinance on first reading by title; Alderman Larry Zieber seconded. Later in the meeting Alderman Clint Sellars moved to place the ordinance on its second and final reading by title, and Alderman Justus seconded. Roll-call votes for both readings were recorded as yes from Justus, Sellars and Zieber. The motions carried.
The ordinance text presented to the board reads in part: “AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF MAYSVILLE, MISSOURI SETTING AN ELECTION ON APRIL 8, 2025 FOR THE QUALIFIED VOTERS OF THE CITY OF MAYSVILLE, MISSOURI, TO DECIDE WHETHER TO FOREGO ANNUAL MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS FOR SIX (6) YEARS IF THE NUMBER OF CANDIDATES FILING IS EQUAL TO THE NUMBER OF SEATS UP FOR ELECTION IN ACCORDANCE WITH MISSOURI REVISED STATUTE 115.124.” The board voted on both readings by roll call.
Why it matters: If voters approve the measure, the city would not hold annual municipal elections for the affected offices for up to six years in cases where the number of candidates equals the number of open seats, a process governed by Missouri Revised Statute 115.124. The ordinance directs that the question appear on the April 8, 2025 ballot.
The item was handled entirely during the regular meeting; no additional debate or amendments were recorded. The board scheduled its next meeting for Dec. 23 at 6:00 p.m.
