Saint Croix Central coaches highlight conference title, scholar-athlete success at school board meeting

"We're just so stinking proud of our kids that we wanted to brag about them for a little while," coach David Linds told the board, summarizing the boys' and girls' results. The girls were conference champions, placed second at sectionals to qualify for state and finished eighth at the state meet. Two runners earned first-team all-conference honors and three were named second-team. Linds said the overall team included 24 runners and that many athletes set lifetime personal records during the season. He reported team grade-point averages of about 3.94 for the girls and 3.87 for the boys.
Girls coach Abby Dilcher credited the group's daily training and peer leadership for the results. She described a season-long emphasis on personal growth and teamwork — examples included a late-starting runner who overcame nerves to finish conference races and teammates who cheered an unfamiliar competitor across a finish line. "The girls had a terrific season," Dilcher said, pointing to the team's momentum and mutual support as drivers of success.
Board members and attendees asked about coaching techniques and motivation. Dilcher said the staff used weekly themes and recognition to encourage persistence and to frame racing as a life lesson rather than just athletic performance.
The board recognized the coaches publicly and thanked them for investing time in student-athletes. The school district maintains a tradition of spotlighting extracurricular programs at board meetings; this presentation was scheduled during the public highlights portion of the agenda.
