Story County EMC wins $80,700 grant for portable solar charging stations for disaster response

The Story County Emergency Management Commission announced April 15 that it received an $80,700 grant from the Iowa Economic Development Authority to develop a solar public charging station intended for disaster response and recovery.
SCEMA reported the county has taken delivery of Jackery battery power bases and that PowerFilm, based in Ames, is developing rigid solar panels now in testing. Commission staff said they expect to learn soon whether the panels are ready for deployment. An email was sent to commissioners on March 31 asking communities to identify two to three individuals to be trained in setup and operation; training is expected to take about an hour.
Because the Commission owns the units, communities that receive equipment will be required to sign a memorandum of understanding that spells out responsibilities for custody, operation and return to the Commission. No distribution schedule or final recipient list was provided in the meeting record.
