Mountainside staff recommend two-year recycling contract extension; engineer backs Denbar for Virginia Avenue paving bid

Mountainside DPW and engineering staff told the Mayor and Council on Nov. 5 that they will prepare resolutions at the next meeting to extend the current recycling contract and to award a paving contract recommended by the borough engineer.
DPW Director Matthew DeAnna recommended extending the Borough's recycling contract with F. Basso Jr. Rubbish Removal, Inc. for two years. The current monthly cost is approximately $17,000 and DeAnna said the price will likely increase with the Consumer Price Index; the contractor agreed to an extension effective Jan. 19, 2026 through Jan. 18, 2028. Council directed staff to draft the appropriate resolution for formal approval at a future meeting.
Separately, the borough engineer recommended awarding Contract 2025-6 Paving Improvements on Virginia Avenue to the lowest bidder, Denbar Construction, Inc., for a base bid plus alternate #1 totaling $221,442.00. Council members said a resolution would be prepared for the next meeting to effect the award.
Also discussed in the session: the salary-ordinance update and an appointment for a part-time secretary supporting DPW/Engineering/Zoning/Tax Assessor functions (Sarah Post) at $29 per hour; Council asked staff to prepare the necessary resolutions for those items as well.
No formal contract award or extension was finalized Nov. 5; both items were reported as recommendations and will return with prepared resolutions for Council action.
