Committee approves removing unmetered fire-line connections from code

The committee approved an ordinance to remove code language authorizing unmetered fire-line connections.
Councilmember Spain asked Metro Water Services for examples and impacts. Mary Peebles introduced Steve Michoud, who explained that water systems have separate domestic, irrigation and fire mains, that fire meters are not used for billing but are used to detect illicit connections, and that removing the unmetered language is intended to prevent unauthorized taps and protect the public system. Michoud said the change is a code “clean up” and not expected to increase revenue.
The committee adopted the ordinance by voice vote (8-0).
