Commission backs zoning change to allow places of worship in R-2A

The North Myrtle Beach Planning Commission on April 21 recommended approval of zoning-text amendment ZTX 26-6 to allow places of worship, including accredited educational facilities when accessory, as a permitted use within the R-2A district.
Staff explained that R-1, R-1B, R-2B and R-3 already permit places of worship by right and this change would bring R-2A into conformity. “This amendment would just add under permitted uses ... churches, places of worship, religious institutions, including accredited educational facilities when accessory thereto to the allowed uses within R-2A,” the staff member (S7) summarized.
Commissioners had no substantive objections and voted to recommend approval to city council.
Why it matters: The change expands where places of worship may be built by right and reduces the need for rezoning or special exceptions in R-2A neighborhoods.
