Board approves two new high-school courses and passes consent agenda

The West Salem School Board voted to approve two new high-school course proposals and passed the consent agenda during its December meeting.
Justin, a district staff member, presented two course proposals (attachment I): a new illustration class focused on media, cartooning and 2-D work; and a Unified Physical Education course modeled on an inclusive middle-school program that integrates students with special needs and general-education peers. A board member moved to approve both proposals, another board member seconded the motion, and the board approved them by voice vote.
On routine business, the board noted a proclamation designating Dec. 8–14 as Computer Science Education Week and accepted several donations, including a $1,078 gift to the FFA from a Culver’s franchise, $523 to the Unsung Hero Scholarship from Brian and Carrie Elson, and smaller community gifts to the Random Acts of Kindness Fund. The board opened the consent agenda (which included minutes of the Nov. 24 meeting, invoices and the donations list) and approved it by voice vote.
Board scheduling and next steps: Brian said new Neola policy updates arrived and that a policy committee meeting will be scheduled after winter break to review them. Staff will also compile data on whether summer-school participation correlates with school-year success and present findings to the teaching and learning committee.
Closed-session notice: The livestream meeting ended with the chair announcing the board would move to closed session to consider personnel evaluation matters under Wisconsin law.
What this means: The course approvals add curricular options for 2026–27, while the consent agenda completes routine business. Committees will follow up in the new year on policy updates and proposed scholarship communications.
