West Salem board hears construction progress, approves two boilers and receives community donations

The West Salem School Board received a construction progress report, approved two new boilers, and accepted donations at its regular meeting.
Ryan (presenter introduced by the chair) walked the board through packet pages 5–48 describing current construction work: elementary base wall pours are underway and prefab walls are expected around the holidays; erosion control permits for high school work have been approved and silt fencing is installed; concrete footings and foundation work were scheduled to begin this week. Track surfacing and field event work (triple jump and pool vault pits) were completed and cured ahead of a brief cold snap.
In new business the board approved purchasing two replacement boilers — one in immediate need of repair and the other nearing the end of its service life — to capture cost savings from doing both replacements simultaneously.
The board also accepted donations reported on the consent agenda: 75 one‑inch binders donated by Brenda Schietone (value recorded), $2,000 donated by Julie Bieginski and Curtis DeBoer to the Random Acts of Kindness fund, and a snare drum with carrying case (valued at $150) donated by Rosalie O'Connell to the high‑school music program. Correspondence included a thank‑you from Our Saviour's Lutheran Church noting about 3,000 lunches provided to children in West Salem and Bangor over the summer, and a proclamation noting November as Homeless Awareness Month with an emphasis on ensuring students experiencing homelessness access public education.
Chair and board members praised the level of detail in project reporting and the transparency of the construction schedule. Ryan said the next Board of Control meeting will be Dec. 10 and promised the board another update on November 24 following additional planning.
