West Salem board receives construction and facilities update; community lends Zamboni during repair

District staff updated the West Salem School Board on multiple ongoing construction and facilities items and described a community step-in that kept ice operations running during a repair.

Brian, a district staff member, told the board that exterior firewall work at the elementary school will use prefabricated panels and that "the prefab sides are gonna be here before Christmas," weather permitting. He said the high-school retaining wall between the new construction area and the track has been poured, foundation work continues and steel deliveries are expected soon.

On maintenance: Brian said the district planned to dig up and replace a grease receptor in the old receiving area, originally scheduled to begin late in the week, but said cold weather may push the work to the following week to avoid equipment problems.

Brian also recounted a pre-Thanksgiving Zamboni breakdown. The essential replacement part was delayed in customs after a Canadian snowstorm; while awaiting the shipment, the Tomah Hockey Association provided a refurbished Zamboni for temporary use. "Big thanks to the Tomah Hockey Association and our hockey association for assisting with that," Brian said.
