Fenton panel approves including five capped employees in 3% 2026 pay increase

The Board of Aldermen Committee voted unanimously to include five employees who have reached the top of their pay ranges in the citywide 3% salary increase for 2026.
Alderwoman Robin Huels, the Personnel liaison, said the matter should have been discussed earlier and not added at the last minute. "Discussion is required and I feel there was not enough discussion," Huels said, arguing for clearer process on pay-range adjustments. Alderwoman Susan Jokerst said longevity merits consideration: "I feel the cap is a good guideline but not a glass ceiling." Mayor Joe Maurath said the pay system "appears broken" in places and added that "this year people need raises," while stopping short of proposing immediate structural changes.
After a motion by Huels and a second from Alderman Terry Bereitschaft, the Committee approved the motion to include the five capped employees in the 3% increase and forwarded the matter to the Board for final action.
The Committee also directed staff to schedule fuller pay-range discussions ahead of budget time to consider alternatives to the current range system and to add a bullet point to future budget agendas noting capped-employee pay discussions.
The action will be considered at the next Board of Aldermen meeting. No dollar amounts for the five affected positions were specified in the Committee record.
