Downtown apartment owners told sprinklers required; estimate for retrofit about $30,000

Property owners Dustin and Marrisa Vogt told the Fayette Board of Aldermen on Feb. 10 that they were notified earlier that day they must install a sprinkler system in upstairs apartments in a downtown building. The Vogts said they had met multiple times with former Building Inspector Tracy Reed and were previously told a sprinkler would not be required.
Mrs. Vogt estimated retrofitting the finished apartments would cost about $30,000 to open walls and replace sidewalks. The Vogts told the council they will install three smoke detectors in each apartment and a fire extinguisher while the city reviews the requirement. Mayor Greg Stidham said the council would follow up and get back to the owners with clarification.
The council did not resolve whether the hotel portion of the building also requires sprinklers at the meeting; staff follow-up was requested to confirm code interpretation and whether the prior inspector's guidance remains valid.
Next steps: staff to review code requirements and the prior inspector's notes and report back to the Vogts and the council.
