Miami R‑I Board approves staff appointments, adopts policy packet and sets student lunch price

The Miami R‑I Board of Education on Aug. 15 approved a slate of personnel actions, adopted an updated Missouri School Boards' Association policy packet, accepted several contracts, and set the K–12 student lunch price at $2.50 for the 2024–25 school year.
President Alicia Collins called the meeting to order at 6:59 p.m. During the meeting the board approved a roster of substitute teachers and support staff for the coming school year and confirmed several individual hires and appointments, including Chris Hudson as FCCLA sponsor, Donna Wadel as a paraeducator and Leland Stewart as night custodian (pending completion of requirements where noted). Two substitute approvals recorded single abstentions: the motion to approve Charlee Chambers passed 6–0 with one abstention by Dea Erickson; the motion to approve Kayla Powell passed 6–0 with one abstention by Richie Powell. Other personnel motions passed unanimously as recorded.
The board voted 7–0 to accept the Annual Secretary's Balance Report as presented. It also approved an updated packet of MSBA policies (BDC, DFI‑2, GBEBC, GCBDA, INC, JEC‑1, JECA‑2, JO‑1, KH, EEA‑AP(1)) and rescinded Policy FFA following consolidation into policy KH. The board accepted the 2024–25 Shield Solutions contract and approved a Lakeland copy‑machine bid that includes an optional color upgrade for the high school office for an additional $15 per month. The board authorized Dr. Daniel Johnson, President Alicia Collins and Secretary Lisa Filtingberger to have access to the Miami R‑I safety deposit box at Citizens Bank in Butler, Missouri.
On a related facilities matter the board reported it had received one bid each for an architect and a construction manager and extended the proposal deadline to Sept. 12, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.; selections are scheduled for a vote at the Sept. 19 BOE meeting.
The board set the K–12 student lunch price at $2.50 for the 2024–25 school year by a 7–0 vote. The principal reported roughly 21 new students (not including about 10 pre‑K students) and 11 students leaving the district as part of the enrollment update.
Near the end of the meeting the board recessed into executive session for personnel matters under RSMo 610.021(1), (3), (6) and (13); it reconvened in open session at 8:54 p.m. and adjourned at 8:55 p.m. The minutes of the Aug. 15 meeting were submitted for approval at the Sept. 19, 2024 meeting.
