An administrative official described how a town power outage prompted an early dismissal at West Salem schools last week and explained the district’s decision-making and follow-up.
The official said the outage affected the district office, internet and phones; Xcel Energy estimated service restoration after 1:00 p.m., and internal generators did not engage. The transportation director arranged buses to be onsite by 11:00 a.m., so administrators dismissed students then. Staff supervised students until parents picked them up and the high school conducted a staggered release for students who drive. "Our staff were here until the last child was picked up," the administrator said.
Administrators noted communications challenges—SkyAlert and Skyward were limited without internet—and used a phone hotspot to re-establish notifications. The district will debrief the event at an upcoming administrative meeting to refine timelines and communications with families. When board members asked whether the day would count as a full instructional day, the administrator said the district would use a built-in snow day if needed and could write to the state superintendent to document an emergency if required.
The board did not take formal action on the incident; administrators said they will review parent feedback and debrief on Wednesday to identify improvements.
