Red Clay superintendent Dr. Dorel Greene resigns; board appoints Dr. Hugh Broomaw as interim

The Red Clay Consolidated School District Board of Education unanimously approved Superintendent Dr. Dorel Greene’s resignation, effective July 17, 2026, and named Dr. Hugh Broomaw as interim superintendent and interim executive secretary to the board, the board announced at its July 8 organizational meeting.

Dr. Greene, who addressed the board before the action, thanked the community and staff and reflected on his time leading the district, noting the challenges of the pandemic and the district’s return to in-person learning. "There is a season and a time for everything," he said, and thanked colleagues, family and the community for their support.

Several public commenters praised Greene’s leadership before the formal vote. Yvonne Johnson, a longtime Red Clay resident and recent national PTA president, presented parting gifts and commended Greene’s support for family–school partnerships and board development. Former board member Kathy Thompson told the board she had supported Greene’s work over many years and said his departure was a loss for the district.

The board then moved to approve Greene’s resignation by voice vote. Following that approval, the board took a separate motion to appoint Dr. Hugh Broomaw as interim superintendent effective July 17, 2026; that motion carried unanimously. The board also approved a motion naming him interim executive secretary to the board.

Board members offered personal remarks of thanks. "You've certainly made your family proud," one member said, honoring Greene’s tenure. The board did not discuss details of a permanent search schedule during the meeting; the interim appointment is to stand until a permanent superintendent is selected.
