Board reviews regular open-enrollment caps, staffing projections; final vote set for next meeting

District administrators presented preliminary regular-education open-enrollment proposals and staffing assumptions and asked the board to defer final action until the district’s 2nd‑Friday count is available.

Ryan (S4) and Alex (S12) explained the proposals are preliminary because the most accurate enrollment count arrives after the 2nd‑Friday count; administrators said they will return in two weeks with updated figures. Ryan said the district uses historical enrollment patterns and an applied population lab study to forecast openings and that recent shifts — including the board’s move to full‑day 4K — complicate enrollment predictions.

Administrators gave the board a rationale for listing some grade levels as “no cap,” saying the district does not expect sufficient open-enrollment demand in those grades to trigger additional staffing: “The reason why we put caps on these grade levels is…if we would exceed that cap, we have to let anybody in,” Ryan said, adding that no‑cap proposals reflect a judgment that new entrants are unlikely to exceed current capacity.

Board members asked for more detailed FTE counts and requested administrators share the updated 2nd‑Friday numbers and a proposed staffing plan at the next meeting. No final vote was taken; the board will consider final regular-education caps after the next staffing update and official counts.
