The Fayette Board of Aldermen tabled a final decision on downtown parking configuration and striping at its May 12 meeting after council members reported mixed public feedback and engineering questions.
Alderman David Frees said residents overwhelmingly opposed temporary parallel parking on Main Street, while Mayor Greg Stidham recalled town-hall opposition to parallel parking on Main but not on Church Street. Alderman JB Waggoner noted concern that the road crown could cause vehicle doors to strike the sidewalk if parallel parking is used and that certain parking angles suggested by engineers could add spaces. Some aldermen favored retaining two-way traffic with parallel parking while others preferred to wait for clearer engineering guidance and business-owner input.
The Board agreed to hold a public hearing and deferred the decision until the next Council meeting so that staff and the Streets Superintendent could provide more complete plans and labeling recommendations before the contractor begins work on the square.
