Queenstown commissioners were told the county is not planning joint MD250 programming and that the town must develop and fund its own celebration schedule if it wants a prominent role in the region’s 250th observance.
Guest Lindsay Simpson Getty, who attended the county MD250 planning meeting, said the county’s gatherings are for coordination only and "there isn't any joint planning happening at the county level at this time." She asked the town to provide a preliminary calendar of events at the next county planning meeting in November and warned that Queenstown is "a bit behind other municipalities" and will need to move quickly.
Getty outlined several programming ideas for Queenstown, including courthouse tours, a colonial market, historical home tours, re-enactments, fireworks, and a Town Crier reading of the Declaration of Independence, and suggested children-specific activities. She said a local gentleman who serves as a Town Crier has offered to assist, and recommended considering dates other than July 4 because of competing events.
Town staff noted no MD250 events were included in the FY26 budget and that the town will need to establish a budget if it opts to host larger events. Getty has scheduled a public meeting at the Town Office for Oct. 14 at 4:30 p.m. to gauge interest and begin local planning.
Next steps: the public meeting on Oct. 14 and submission of a preliminary events calendar at the county’s November planning meeting.
