Miami R‑1 board renews superintendent through 2028, approves gym bids and handbook updates

MIAMI, Mo. — The Miami R‑1 Board of Education voted unanimously at its Jan. 22 regular meeting to renew Dr. Daniel Johnson as superintendent and transportation director through June 30, 2028, and approved a package of operational and personnel measures including gym facility bids and handbook updates.
The board, led by President Alicia Collins, approved motions to begin seeking bids for new flooring in the district’s new gym and to solicit bids for bleachers and seating. Members also approved updates to the Missouri Options Handbook and the district’s 2024–25 Activities Handbook, and adopted an update to MSBA Policy IGBCA. Each motion carried by a 6–0 vote, according to meeting minutes.
Dr. Daniel Johnson, the superintendent, was reappointed by motion of Les Nieder and seconded by Richie Powell; the motion carried 6–0. Earlier in the meeting, the board moved the superintendent’s evaluation to executive session for personnel matters and later adjourned to executive session under RSMo 610.021 (1), (3), (6) and (13). The board did not return to open session that evening.
Other personnel actions included approval, pending paperwork, of Logan Smith as a substitute for the 2024–25 school year. The board also noted continuing staffing needs: Agriculture and FACS positions must be advertised due to critical shortages, and openings are anticipated for kindergarten, pre‑K, a counselor and a volleyball coach.
During routine reports, the high school boys basketball team was reported at 6–8 and the girls at 3–11; the principal said classroom observations are planned next week and that a Missouri Options student assigned to the district is doing well. The superintendent reported the district’s blood drive that day drew 30 donors and announced the board will provide lunch for faculty and staff on Feb. 4, 2025.
The board approved the consent agenda, which included minutes from the Dec. 19, 2024 meetings, January bills and financial ledgers. Minutes for the Jan. 22 meeting were submitted for formal approval on Feb. 20, 2025. The meeting was recorded in the minutes by Secretary Lisa Filtingberger and signed by President Alicia Collins.
