Miami R‑1 board hears athletics, enrollment, safety training and renovation plans

At its Oct. 15 meeting the Miami R‑1 Board received staff reports: junior high and high school athletics updates, enrollment figures (107 elementary; 86 JH/HS), completion of ALICE safety training, and a review of high school office renovation blueprints by a Cameron Construction representative.
During staff reports at the Miami R‑1 Board of Education meeting on Oct. 15, 2024, administrators updated the board on athletics, enrollment and safety and reviewed renovation plans for the high school office.
Zech Blaine reported on athletics: junior high boys basketball has 11 players and a 1–6 record; junior high girls basketball has seven players and a 5–2 record; and high school volleyball is 14–6–1. Blaine described incentives to encourage student attendance at games.
In the principal report the board heard that the first quarter ended Oct. 11 and that grades were being prepared for distribution. Enrollment was reported at 107 elementary students and 86 junior-high/high-school students. The principal noted the district’s Missouri Options (MO Options) program is active and commended staff for implementing it.
On safety and facilities, the board was told that ALICE training has been completed. Dr. Daniel Johnson said he met with Hubbard/Cameron Construction to review plans for a new high school office; Steve Hubbard went over blueprints with the board and subsequently left the meeting at 7:47 p.m.
These items were presented for information and follow-up; no open-session votes were required on the reports. The meeting moved to executive session at 7:51 p.m.
