Miami R‑I board moves into closed executive session to discuss personnel

The Miami R‑I Board of Education voted unanimously July 28 to go into a closed executive session to address personnel matters under Missouri law, adjourning the public portion of its special meeting at 1:02 p.m. and returning at 2:10 p.m.

Vice President Richie Powell presided over the meeting held in the Miami R‑1 board room. At the start of the session, Dea Erickson, the board treasurer, moved to approve the meeting agenda; Les Nieder seconded and the board approved the agenda 6–0.

The board then identified a personnel item listed under Old Business and voted to move that matter into an executive session. "Motion was made by DE seconded by LN to adjourn to executive session with closed record and roll call vote for personnel matters pursuant 610.021 (1), (3) & (13) RSMo at 1:02 p.m.," the minutes state. The roll call on the motion recorded six yes votes (Jamie Fairbairn, Melanie Schaller, J.D. Talley, Les Nieder, Dea Erickson and Richie Powell); President Alicia Collins was absent.

All visitors in the room were asked to leave before the board convened in closed session. The minutes record the board returning from executive session at 2:10 p.m., following a roll-call vote to exit; the board again recorded six yes votes and President Collins remained absent.

The minutes of the July 28 special meeting were submitted for approval on Aug. 15, 2024. The minutes were reported by Treasurer Dea Erickson and typed by Secretary Lisa Filtingberger; the printed copy includes a line for President Alicia Collins to sign approval.
