Council says insurer denied child-injury claim tied to town bell; council secures monument

Mayor Jim Beagley updated the council on a recent claim involving a child and the town bell. Beagley said the town's insurance adjuster has disapproved the claim, though he warned the claimant could still pursue a lawsuit.
"They disapproved the claim, so we're good there," Mayor Beagley said, adding the town had taken interim safety steps: staff secured the bell with a chain and ordered mounting hardware to anchor it more permanently. Council members discussed additional measures including signage and minor masonry repairs to the monument pedestal because some stonework is beginning to separate.
Councilors said they are awaiting necessary anchor hardware and will install signs advising supervision around the monument. They also noted the insurance company's denial does not preclude later legal action by the claimant.
