Duxbury select board approves permit for Heather Bone Foundation kids parade

The Duxbury Select Board on Friday approved an event permit for the Heather Bone Foundation’s annual kids bicycle parade, scheduled for Sunday, June 28, after town staff reported the applicant had satisfied public-safety and permitting requirements.

Ashley, a town staff member, told the board that applicant Cole O'Shaughnessy had submitted a letter, the permit application and payment, and "has satisfied all requirements." She said the event, to be held at Taylor Field behind the school, is expected to draw about 400 people, will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will include a bicycle parade around the back loop, field games and food service.

Ashley said the police, fire department and board of health had been notified and involved in planning. She told the board that the police are requiring two detail officers (already being scheduled), the fire department had raised no objections, and Lauren from the Board of Health required three portable toilets, which had been secured. Chestnut Street Grill was confirmed to hold the necessary permits to serve food.

Cindy, a select board member, moved to grant the permit to Mr. O'Shaughnessy on behalf of the Heather Bone Foundation, with the permit conditioned on the stated requirements; Ryan, a select board member, seconded the motion. The chair called a roll-call vote: Cindy voted yes, Brian voted yes and Amy voted yes, and the motion passed.

The chair noted the application had arrived late amid a transition in the town office and asked staff to improve the process to avoid similar last-minute items. The board completed the short meeting and adjourned.

Next steps: the event is approved to proceed under the conditions described to the board; no further board action on this item was scheduled.
