VDOT updates Smyth supervisors on I‑81 decel lane, bridges and shoulder work after winter storms

VDOT Acting Residency Administrator Matthew Lewis told the Smyth County Board on April 9 that the agency is behind on certain projects because crews prioritized cleanup after February snow and ice storms. “VDOT is behind on certain projects due to clean up from the February snow and ice storms,” Lewis said.
Lewis described routine maintenance work under way — patching potholes, mowing, cleaning ditches, replacing damaged pipes, stabilizing slopes and machine grading unpaved roads — and stressed that some projects cooperate with state area office forces and VDOT regional headquarters. Assistant Residency Engineer Pam Heath said Vale Circle needs paving before it can be taken into the state system, and that the road would qualify for cost-share funding for local residents.
Lewis also presented a list of projects that are under construction or in development, including an I‑81 NB MM 45.5 decel lane (UPC 116160) under construction (expected December 2027), a Route 11/SR 660 roundabout (UPC 119429) under construction with an August 2027 target, and several bridge replacement or rehabilitation efforts currently in project development with dates to be determined.
