Votes at a glance: Kent council approves Teamsters contract and accepts $463,153 developer settlement

Developer settlement: Following an executive session about current or potential litigation, Public Works Director Chad Barron recommended acceptance of a settlement to address work not completed at the Madison Plaza development (Meeker Street and Madison Avenue). The recommended settlement was with Old Republic Surety in the amount of $463,153, subject to final terms acceptable to the public-works director and city attorney. Council Member Traeger moved to authorize the mayor to sign the settlement; the motion was seconded and carried 6-0.

Other procedural votes: Early in the meeting the council approved the published agenda by a 6-0 vote. The consent calendar was moved and processed as part of the evening's business; individual consent items were presented as having been vetted through committees and workshops.

What the actions mean: The Teamsters agreement provides an authorized contract window for represented field staff for the stated three-year period; the settlement is intended to bring the city to financial closure over incomplete developer work at Madison Plaza, subject to finalization of terms acceptable to city staff.
