Peterborough approves $31,553.90 conversion of pool chlorination system to liquid sodium hypochlorite

The Select Board approved a $31,553.90 expenditure from the Adams Pool Improvement Capital Reserve Fund to convert the town pool’s chlorination system from the current solid calcium hypochlorite ‘hockey puck’ method to a liquid sodium hypochlorite injection system.
Utilities Superintendent Nate Brown told the board the project calls for a 1,000-gallon sodium hypochlorite tank and 1–2 deliveries would likely meet a full summer’s needs. Brown said the liquid system would be safer for staff, use smaller, more energy-efficient pumps, and require only two monitoring probes rather than the five currently in use; under the proposed setup one probe would need annual calibration and the other would not require recalibration, compared with daily calibrations for the five-probe arrangement now in place.
Seth MacLean noted staff did not include the pool on the town SCADA system as part of this conversion but recommended adding SCADA monitoring in a future upgrade so DPW could remotely monitor pH and chlorine levels. Bill Kennedy moved to approve the expenditure; Chair Tyler Ward seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
