Parks fall event canceled for lack of volunteers; police report grants, vehicle arrival and hiring progress

Parks and Recreation told the Greenwood City Council that the October 12 fall test/festival is canceled because volunteer staffing did not materialize, and the department flagged ongoing vandalism at park facilities.
"We had pretty much no engagement from any volunteers…so with that being said, we cannot move forward with what we were planning on doing," Chair (Speaker 3) reported on behalf of parks. Staff said the same few residents repeatedly shoulder event responsibilities and urged broader community participation for future events.
The police representative (Agency official, Speaker 8) reported a new patrol vehicle delivered from the Kansas Highway Patrol and scheduled to be striped and equipped with radar and radio. The department said it received a $10,000 grant to support body cameras and $42,000 from Jackson County for Central Square. Police also reported applicant activity: eight applicants, with roughly six being considered and some academy graduates expected in December.
Council members thanked staff for the updates. The parks cancellation will require rescheduling or revised volunteer outreach for future community events; police staffing and grant administration will proceed through normal departmental processes.
