Residents press for disclosure of $100,000 Chapel Station renovations from Facilities Expendable Trust Fund

Residents at the Jan. 22 Sanbornton Budget Committee hearing said the town voting guide does not explain that the Facilities Expendable Trust Fund could be used for roughly $100,000 in renovations at Chapel Station.
Audry Barriault raised the point, saying the guide does not make the intended use clear. Fire Chief Paul Dexter responded that some funds previously earmarked toward Chapel Station were used for insulation at Central Station and that he is seeking bids for work at Chapel Station to begin in the spring, including a new roof, exterior repairs, and renovations to the bathroom and furnace. Town Administrator Trish Stafford asked how much it costs to heat Chapel Station; Chief Dexter said he did not have that information on hand.
The Budget Committee moved on to formal recommendations. The committee recommended Article 2 (the Selectmen’s Capital Reserve Funds article) at $1,796,125 on a unanimous vote after a motion by Joe Bodwell and second by Selectman Glenn Frederick. The committee also recommended the Selectmen’s Expendable Trust Funds article at $125,000 following a motion by Mark Brown and a second by Joe Bodwell; that motion passed unanimously.
The public hearing closed at 8:15 p.m. and the committee adjourned at 8:40 p.m. The Selectboard is awaiting additional warrant articles and will schedule another public hearing, the Selectboard noted during the meeting.
