Committee member Bill MacDuffie, Jr. noted a prior discussion about an 8' concrete back wall and said a taller wall (about 10') would be preferable; Cowdrey confirmed the plan shows a 4' concrete wall above grade topped by 4' of timber, and that concrete thickness is shown as 10". Chair Jim Hoyt and members discussed metal beams for the front wall, metal siding, and the need for footings under steel beams; member Harvey Peters warned that if a beam were struck the building could be compromised, highlighting the tradeoffs between impact resistance and constructability.
Cowdrey emphasized the plans were conceptual and not structural, and that bracing and structural specifics should be finalized with builders and suppliers. The committee agreed to consult a concrete finisher and a structural engineer on bracing and beam footing questions and to contact Cheryl Bentley regarding the status of the DES permit.
