Silvis staff reports: fire engine needing repair, police recruitment and retirements noted

At the May 5 Silvis City Council meeting the city’s department chiefs highlighted near‑term operational issues and personnel changes.
Fire Chief Dave Johnson told the council that engine 4661 will not enter pump and pressure mode and that clearing error codes and necessary parts and labor will cost about $10,700. He said the truck is repairable and the department intends to fix it.
Police Chief Gene Karzin reported recent recruitment outreach including ride‑alongs with students in the UTHS Law Enforcement program and said the department currently awaits Civil Service scheduling for applicant testing. He noted several pending applications and that Officer Merissa Minor is now attending the academy.
Joe Rockwell of Public Works & Parks said two employees recently retired, staff have been reassigned to cover work, and the department will hold an open house retirement on the coming Friday to honor the retirees. City Clerk Amy Malmstrom added that a recent railroad event drew large crowds and that another such event is being planned for this fall.
These items were presented as staff reports; the council offered thanks and congratulations to retirees but did not take formal action on the equipment or staffing items in this meeting.
