Silvis fire and police chiefs report rising calls and operational updates

Fire Chief Dave Johnson told the council on Feb. 3 that the department has seen a rise in call volume and is increasing training. "Last year when I said January 1st through September 14th at 9am we ran 236 calls; January of this year we ran 249 calls," Johnson said, citing the recent winter period and consecutive structure fires as strains on staff.
Chief Johnson thanked personnel for extra shifts during the extreme cold and said the department will increase monthly training to build capacity.
Police Chief Gene Karzin described benefits of a Live Scan system for the department’s arrest processing and supported the council’s authorization to apply for a Live Scan grant. "If we can get that it would be very beneficial for all the officers and how they handle the arrest when we get them," Karzin said.
Public Works reported receipt of new dump trucks, which led the council to declare several older trucks surplus earlier in the meeting. The meeting record includes no additional operational details, timelines for new training programs, or expected grant timelines if the Live Scan award is made.
The council adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
