Springfield selectmen review department budgets and set $40,000 project placeholder for 2025

The Springfield Board of Selectmen reviewed department budget requests and a projects list for 2025 at its Dec. 9 meeting at the Memorial Building.
Gardner Yenawine, representing the Cemetery Trustees, presented a proposed cemetery budget that the board said reflects an increase of about $2,500 for 2025. Jessalyn Straniti reviewed the Recreation Department request, asking for $4,000 for the coming year. Annika Munholand told the board the Library Trustees’ proposed budget shows an increase of $642. Fire Chief Ian MacMillan presented the Fire Department request, which reflects an overall increase of $3,247; he clarified that a proposed incident command vehicle is being pursued through the capital improvements plan and is not included in the operating budget before the board.
As part of prioritizing town projects, the board proposed placing $40,000 in the 2025 budget to cover recurring and non‑recurring building and infrastructure needs, including potential work on the meetinghouse kitchen and research into boat ramp repairs. Selectman Steve Dzubak said he will begin obtaining quotes for the projects the board prioritized.
The board discussed equipment procurement for the highway/highland fleet. Neal Huntoon said he will meet with Jeff from CAT to inspect a used grader the town might acquire; preliminary numbers discussed with vendors suggested a purchase could be under $100,000 including a $30,000 trade‑in for the town’s current grader. Neal also reported a John Deere option in the roughly $150,000 range is being considered; he will report back after inspection.
No formal vote to adopt the $40,000 line item was recorded at the meeting; the board discussed the proposal as it develops the 2025 budget.
The board accepted routine administrative items later in the agenda and will continue budget work in upcoming meetings.
