Police seek part-time officer as transition; board reviews prosecution contract and accepts preliminary tax rate

The Board of Selectmen heard updates from the Police Department on Oct. 28, including new equipment, staffing plans and a proposed prosecution contract.
Chief Zullo reported the department has received new tasers and scheduled final training. He told the board the Sullivan County attorney is willing to handle prosecutions for Springfield for an estimated $5,000 annually under a three-year contract. Chief Zullo and Poul Heilmann said the department is proposing budgeting for a part-time officer now to provide a transition when Sgt. Julian retires next November; the recommendation will be forwarded to the Budget Committee.
The board also reviewed and accepted a preliminary municipal tax rate of $23.66. Chair Poul Heilmann moved to accept the rate; Selectman Steve Dzubak seconded the motion and both voted in favor.
